Technology Can Widen—or Close—the Gap
Artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies are already changing how people learn, work, access healthcare, manage money, and participate in society. These changes can either reinforce existing gender inequality or help reduce it. The difference depends on who has access to technology, who helps design it, and whether its risks are addressed from the beginning.
UN Women notes that AI has the potential to significantly advance gender equality by improving social and economic outcomes, but it can also perpetuate or create new inequalities if it is poorly managed. Therefore, the goal is not simply to develop more advanced technology. It is to ensure that technology expands opportunities for women and girls rather than limiting them.
Expanding Access to Education and Skills
AI-based learning tools can make education more flexible and personalized. They can translate materials, adjust explanations to different learning levels, provide practice support, and help learners study at times and places that fit their lives. For girls and women facing distance, caregiving responsibilities, safety concerns, or limited local educational opportunities, online and AI-supported learning can open doors that were previously closed.
UNESCO emphasizes the need to increase access for girls and women to digital skills, STEM education, engineering, computer science, and AI-related learning opportunities. When women gain digital skills, they gain more than technical ability. They gain tools for employment, entrepreneurship, civic participation, and leadership in a world where technology increasingly shapes every sector.
Supporting Economic Independence
AI and digital services can also support women’s economic empowerment. Online marketplaces, digital payments, remote work platforms, and AI-powered business tools can help women start businesses, reach customers, manage finances, and access professional networks without relying only on traditional local opportunities.
The UN notes that digital financial services, when designed with women’s needs in mind, can increase women’s economic autonomy and access to credit. AI can further support small business owners by helping them analyze sales, improve customer communication, translate content, or manage administrative tasks. These tools can be especially valuable for women balancing business with family responsibilities.
Better Services When Women Help Design Them
AI systems learn from data, and data reflects the world that produced it. If women’s experiences, health needs, work patterns, and safety concerns are missing from datasets, AI systems may provide less accurate or less useful services. UN Women points out that some AI-powered health systems can give inaccurate answers to women because they do not recognize symptoms that may present differently in women.
This shows why women must be involved not only as users, but as researchers, engineers, designers, and decision-makers. UNESCO states that the perspectives, experiences, and skills of women and girls are crucial for economic and technological advancement, and that women are already driving innovation as scientists, entrepreneurs, and leaders. More diverse teams are more likely to identify blind spots and build technology that serves everyone.
Preventing Bias and Online Harm
AI can also reproduce gender stereotypes if it is trained on biased data or designed without care. For example, voice assistants that are automatically presented as female can reinforce harmful assumptions about women being submissive or compliant. UNESCO has highlighted this issue and recommends avoiding default female voice assistants, discouraging gender-based abuse, and developing more gender-balanced technology teams.
Technology-facilitated gender-based violence is another serious concern. AI can be misused for harassment, deepfakes, stalking, or the spread of harmful stereotypes. UN Women stresses the need for safeguards against violence that may be amplified by AI, along with more gender-disaggregated data and gender-responsive AI governance. Equality requires not only access to technology, but also safety and dignity online.
Building AI With Gender Equality at the Center
To make AI a positive force for SDG 5, governments, companies, schools, and communities need to act together. Practical steps include teaching girls digital and AI skills, supporting women entrepreneurs and researchers, testing AI systems for bias, protecting users from online violence, and including women in AI leadership and policy decisions.
UNESCO recommends targeted programs to expand women’s participation in STEM and AI, support women-led digital businesses, and eliminate gender stereotypes and bias in AI systems. These actions turn gender equality from an abstract goal into a practical design principle for the technologies of the future.

AI will not create gender equality by itself. But if people build and govern it with inclusion, fairness, and safety in mind, AI can help remove barriers, expand opportunities, and amplify women’s voices. The future of technology should not merely include women—it should be shaped by them.
